2-WAY STRETCH VS 4-WAY STRETCH
Stretch can be defined by the possible direction of movement, such as 2-way or 4-way stretch. In a 2-way
stretch, the fabric will only move in one direction, crosswise or lengthwise. A 4-way stretch fabric means it
can move in both of these directions, allowing for unrestricted movement.
2-WAY MECHANICAL STRETCH
Similarly, stretch can be defined by how the fabric is created. Elastane stretch refers to fabrics where
elastane thread is part of the structure and the amount of stretch depends on the percentage of elastin
within the fabric. Alternatively, when yarn texture is combined in knitting techniques to create a small
amount of stretch in an overall fabric, we refer to this as a mechanical stretch.
